Fox Lake is a village of about 10,900 residents on the Chain O'Lakes, roughly 50 miles northwest of Chicago in Lake and McHenry counties. It is the end of the line for Metra's Milwaukee District North, about an hour and a half to Union Station, and it sits on Route 12 and Grand Avenue.
Housing here is defined by the water. Main-lake frontage on Fox Lake, Pistakee Lake, and Nippersink Lake sits at the top of the market. Channel-front ranches and converted lake cottages are the entry point, and there are newer subdivisions and condos away from the shoreline for buyers who want the lake life without the pier. Flood zones, seawalls, piers, and well-and-septic are normal parts of a Fox Lake purchase, and they change what a house really costs. See the full guide to Chain O'Lakes waterfront homes for sale.
Schools are Fox Lake Grade School District 114 and Big Hollow District 38 for K-8, and Grant Community High School. Summer runs on the Chain: Blarney Island, the Fox Waterway, Chain O'Lakes State Park, and boat traffic from May through Labor Day. The village regulates short-term rentals, which matters if part of your plan is renting the house out in July.
